My name is John D. Roach. I am an Award Winning Photographer who exhibits extensively. Photography is my passion during retirement and for the rest of my life. I retired in June 2010 after many years in engineering and construction, as well as commercial property and facility management. I am a 10 year U.S. Navy veteran; and a retired Facilities Manager and Hospital Director of Support Services.
Photography was on the list of "must do" when I retired. I knew that often I had the photographers eye but lacked knowledge. Thus, I took two digital photography courses at the local community college to see if it really was right for me, bought a Nikon D90 DX Digital SLR, and started the quest for more knowledge, equipment and I fell in love, again, with photography. The D90 was recently converted to an IR (infrared) camera. I shoot with full frame FX Cameras such as the Nikon Df, D750 and D800 as well as my light weight cropped sensor Fuji 100, X-E1, X-T1 and X-Pro2 with a host of supporting lenses and equipment.
My passion for photography has led me to take now over 30 online courses; most with BetterPhoto, becoming a Better Photo Certified Pro, and several with Perfect Picture School of Photography as well as completing in about a year the New York Institute of Photography Professional Certification course. Those courses kept me focused and helped me to develop more understanding and skills both in photography and the digital darkroom. These courses got me out shooting in the cold weather that first winter which was very good. I continue to seek ways to learn more about photography.
I am or have been active in camera groups such as the Milwaukee Coalition for Photographic Arts, the Wisconsin Area Camera Clubs, and Union League of Chicago Photography Group, where I have to learned from others and participate in the competitions and exhibits. I am also a member of the Photographic Society of America where I participate in study groups. Most importantly I am very active at Nikonians.org which is an online community of Nikon Camera lovers. That is where I have learned many things about this great art and craft. My interests include exploring the beauty of landscape, seascape, architecture, floral, macro, and wildlife photography with an artistic eye.
My wife and I currently live in Glen Allen, Virginia near Richmond.
I am active in photographic art groups, lead seminars at photo groups as well as University of Richmond and previously at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
To capture the light in the best way and to display detail, tone, and texture to tell a story, I use a variety of photographic tools and techniques.
My approach is guided by a vision that includes experimenting with ways of seeing light such as using, in addition to color, infrared imagery, painterly effects or conversion to black and white.
Photography is my full time passion now that I am retired after a successful career in engineering and management.
If any of my work captures your imagination, do not hesitate to contact me in order to discover the possibilities to learn more., I hope to share quality images as well as post some articles (see my website www.jdroachphotography.com and my blog) about photography, travel, retirement, and what the future offers on this "painting with light" journey and adventure.
