Trip to Le Claire, Iowa, Lock & Dam #14 on the Mississippi River
by John D. Roach
On Saturday Morning, I arrived at Lock and Dam #4 to find the recreation area flooded and the road closed. However, given the 150 mile trip to Le Claire, I was not going to be put off that easily. I drove down the road and found a place to park and managed to get a few images of the pelicans. Here is one of those great birds taking off. You can see droplets of water behind him as he slowly and gracefully climbs up further into the sky. More information and images will follow..... Here is another image where the light was wonderful on these two magnificent birds. Here is another image of just one of the fine birds. Here is another of one landing in the water. Wow! What an awesome arching wingspan. ON Sunday, less then a quarter mile from where I managed to photograph the pelican, I caught this image of a house surrounded by flood waters from the Mississippi.
